Expressions

**I found this post in my list- and it looks like I never published it.. not sure why- but I will publish it now.  I will add a part 2 with more current expressions...**

This is my favorite sequence.  Dyllan (4 months) has learned to master "The Pout".

4 months:
Trying to get some work done and the only way she would stop crying was by
being close to me.  So I sit her in my lap and continued to use the computer.
She has a little smirk on her face.. got what she wanted.

Caught Dyllan cracking herself up in her crib.

"What."

Dyllan and Mylo, Best Friends Forever.

Mother's Day picnic
"Whoa...."

Dancing Queen

"I dont think so..."

Doing some flag pole with Poppy.
"Watching the news, duh"

Figuring out that her hands are connected to her body and trying with all her
might (you can tell by her tongue and eyebrows) to make them do what she wants.

Took Dyllan to moms Chemo appt.  She was quite the hit in her Elf jacket.

Water baby

I don't know if I have already mentioned this somewhere else- and if I have- sorry for the repetition, but...

Ever since Dyllan's first bath- she has absolutely loved the water.  The day before we took Dyllan home from the NICU the nurse said to us that we could give her her first bath.  She seemed a little cautious- and told us that babies got cold really fast out of the incubator and they usually cried their eyes out.. oh yeah, and said that we should be extra careful because they are very slippery when wet- so be careful not to drop her after the bath!!  HAHA.  Well this scared me enough- to give Dan the honors.  So Dan gave Dyllan her first bath, while I video taped and took pictures (rolls kinda reversed..).  Dan put Dyllan in the little tub in the hospital sink, and from the very first splash, she loved it.  The nurse was so surprised!

Anyway, ever since, Dyllan has loved the water ( swimming in lake washington ).   Bath time is her favorite time of day (she gets soooo excited when the tub fills up- she can hardly wait to get in!), and going for a swim is the biggest treat!  I wonder what this means..  will she be a swimmer?  Water polo player? Scuba diver? Aqua Aerobics instructor? Synchronized swimmer?  Professional Snorkeler?  who knows....
Scooba Dyllan, ready to tackle the beach...

Weeeee- Flying Dyllan!
Going in for a dip...
Mona Vale Ocean Baths
"Grace" swimming up to Dyllan Grace
(Dan thought this was pretty cool!  "Look Dyllan, she is Grace too")
"Uhh , where is my Dad?"
"Oh bother, more kisses..."

Trying to copy the old lady's stroke- and totally beating her in the race...obviously.

Time to go.

Visa Granted!

Woo Hoo!  My visa was approved!  I am now officially a Permanent Resident here.  I am actually in a little bit of shock because they told me the current processing time was 12 months.  I was pretty sure it would take close to that because all the forums online said anywhere for 5-8 months, and everytime I called they said the same thing-12 months.. so I'm not sure how mine got approved so quickly- but I'll take it!  Oh, and I also bi-passed the 2 year temporary resident part.  When you apply for a spouse visa- you apply for the temporary and permanent at the same time.  Usually what happens is you are first granted a temporary resident visa- then after 2 years, if your relationship is still genuine and continuing, you are granted your permanent residency.  I guess our case officer was feeling really generous!

Huge relief- I now have insurance and the ability to work!  The immigration department told me to apply for Dyllan's citizenship separate from my application because it would be much quicker and she is an automatic citizen by decent.  I lodged her application weeks before mine- and hers still hasn't come back.  Fingers crossed hers is just around the corner.  For now- having one approved is great!  Yay.

Weekend Recap

This weekend was great- everything a weekend should be- Fun, free (almost), and as a family.

Friday night Dan and I made pizzas for dinner, put Dyllan to bed (turned on her remote baby monitor next door AKA the cordless babysitter) and headed out to The Sands for live music and a bike ride.

Top Left: Head Lamp, McQueen filled with wine-, bikes parked in the bushes- ID's- oops...
Top Right: Live Band
Bottom Left: The Sands Hotel
Bottom right:  Only had $8- so asked the bartender if he could split one glass of wine in two glasses- lucky day- he filled them both up and only charged us $6 (for a $7.50 glass of wine- sauvignon blanc from the marlborough region- Dan's fav!)
Saturday we took Dyllan on a bike ride- which was supposed to end up at the beach so Dyllan could go swimming- but instead somehow we managed to go on a LONG bike ride... off-roading... around Narabeen Lake.  Hmmm.... not sure how we ended up there (Dan)... The off-roading was too much for my bike- and the peddle came loose.  So we decided to head back.  By this point Dyllan was getting fussy- she, too had enough of the bumps- and fussed the whole bumpy way back to smooth pavement, then fell asleep in her seat.  Haha...

Haha!!  All set, ready to hit the road (not literally..)
Wet suit- check, ugly hat- check, death grip- check!

Little did Dyllan or I know.. but we were about to do some off-roading...

Sunday we went down to the beach for a surf and some swimming.  Kayleigh took these photos with an app on her phone:

Money Matters

"Money is only a tool.  It will take you wherever you wish, but it will not replace you as the driver."
~ Ayn Rand

"Money often costs too much."
~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

"A penny saved is a penny earned"
~ Benjamin Franklin and my mom

"Many people take no care of their money till they com nearly to the end of it,
and others do just the same with their time"
 ~ Johan Wolfgang von Goethe

"We don't have a trillion-dollar debt because we haven't taxed enough;
we have a trillion-dollar debt because we spend too much"
 ~ Ronald Reagan

There are so many good quotes out there about money.  These are just a few I picked that I can relate to- especially these days.  With the big move, a new baby, a home mortgage (America)  and rent (Australia), a dud car, and only one of us legally allowed to work- money has been on our minds.  A lot.  Not in a stressed out worried kind of way- actually- but more of a challenge, or a game almost.    We are learning some very useful lessons:  how to change our attitude toward money and how to cut back on spending.   In the past, we have been pretty fortunate.  We have worked hard and done pretty well.  However, these days working hard just leads to needing to work harder.  Its really simple, right?  Money in should be greater than money out.  We learned this in like second grade.  So why is it so hard?  For us, something had to change.  The first thing we decided to change was our attitudes toward money.   Money is only a tool- to help us achieve what we want to achieve.  I cant tell you how many times in the past week we have both said to each other "if we can't pay for it today, then we can't afford it".  This has been a great quote for us..  and its totally worked.  We cut our credit cards up so there is no more paying for things later.  Over the past week or so we haven't spent a penny on things the "little things" we used to like:  coffee, candy, gas, eating out, shopping, movies, or music. And you know what?  It actually felt great.  Its been out little challenge, a game we play with each other... to see how well we did that day.

I have learned that I may think I need something today.. then when I dont actually buy it- I end up forgetting about it or making do with out it all together. For example- last week our fan broke in our bedroom - and both Dan and I have a hard time sleeping unless its cool - and my natural thought was.. I will just go to Kmart or Vinnies (thrift shop) and pick up a new one. But, wait, I actually couldnt.. so we have gone wihtout a fan for a few nights and suprisingly all nights (except last night) have been fine- there has been a breeze outside and we didnt need the fan. (Last night was an exception- and we were both up most of the night because we were too hot..) A few other changes that I have made include: using (gulp) fewer diaper wipes- we are nearing the end of Dyllan's wipes- so instead of using like 30 wipes for every poopy diaper- I use 15 (hah which is still a lot- but I dont want the poop to touch my fingers..) and instead of changing Dyllan before a meal- I just let her sit in her wet/ damp diaper (not poopy ones) while she eats- because after she's done eating she needs a new one anyway. You know how you use less toothpast as you near the end of the tube? (something like 50% of its life is used on the last 5% of the tube- I made that up, but something like that?!) Well- I noticed our kitchen soap was almost out- the pump could no longer reach the soap- so... I filled it up with some water- and vuala! enough soap for another few weeks  (it was too thick anyway)! I have learned to make grocery lists- so that I am not running down to the store everyday for just 2 things- then actually coming back with 5 or 6 things (4 of which i really didn't need at all- like magazines or candy). Dan and I have mastered BYO (bring our own)- we pack picnics or snacks if we go out for more than a few hours- we bring our own drinks (in Australia bringing your own bottle of wine or beer to a restaurant is very popular and much cheaper). We fill up on samples, and graciously take day old bread that would otherwise have been thrown away. NO- we are not dressing in rags and living in a cardboard box... we are just playing the game- challenging ourselves to cut back, cut out, and spend less than we make. And you know what? Its totally working!

Money Game

When you dont have it, you cant spend it... and for the first time in both of our lives- we have actually gone without.  Dont feel too sorry for us though- we are doing just fine and this little $0 balance streak is almost over.

Dan gets paid tomorrow- and we just sold our car today (thank god!) - so as of a few hours ago... "we can pay for it today, and we can afford it"  BUT, that doesnt mean we will quit living like we have over the past week.  We have things to save for now.

Smart Pig, saves money.

When Sean and I were young- mom used to go around our old neighborhood collecting bags and bags of aluminum cans. We had a few neighbors who donated their cans to us- because mom used to take them downtown Seattle to the big recycling center for crushing. Sean and I used to love watching as the men poured bag after bag of cans into the machine that crushed all the cans and turned them into one big aluminum block. In exchange for all of our cans- we would get cash. Usually only a couple dollars- but mom used to tell us that the money was going straight into our college savings account.

Looking back, mom was very smart. Not only did she engrave the fact that we were going to college in our minds at a young age- she taught us the importance of saving money and planning for the future. I hope that one day we can teach Dyllan (and our kids) similar lessons.

Team Work

Lately Yazzo (Lozzo, Laurie, Dad-in-law) and I have been teaming up in the kitchen.  Its awesome- he gets home from work (he's a teacher at the High School down the road) at around 3:15pm- he usually goes to the gym- and better yet, the past 2 days has taken Dylli out for a walk- then comes home and starts cooking dinner.  He has the main course all picked out- and I chip in with the sides.  Two nights ago- he made a chicken noodle salad and I accompanied that with some stuffed mushrooms.  Last night he made salmon patties- and I made sushi.  Wonder if he will come around tonight...?  (I'll letcha know...)

Santos Boys do Sydney

Busy is an understatement.  We have not stopped going-going-going, really since we got here.. but especially this past week or so.  Our good friends- Dave and Enso Santos came to visit us last Thursday from Seattle.  I used to work for Dr. Santos and nanny Enso when he was a baby- and on and off since (he is now 4 1/2, wow time flies!).

Santos Cafe at the Airport- how perfect!

We had a packed schedule- trying to fit in the sites and highlights of Sydney in 5 short days.  And I must say- we did a darn good job.  They arrived on Thursday morning at 8:30am- and we wasted no time getting started on activities.  After a quick stop off at Dan's work for lunch and to say hello- we hit the Tonanga Zoo.  We spent some time checking out the local beaches and headed home for dinner before passing out.  The jet lag had kicked in- and everyone (including Dyllan and I with our sympathy jet-lag) passed out early.

Friday morning Dan took Dave to Manly for his Friday morning ocean swim - group practice.  Dave joined the pink caps and kicked off the morning swimming with over 150 other pink capped die hards + 2 sharks.  I stayed home with the kids (haha, not that I would have been up for plunging into the ocean with sharks at 6am anyway)- and got them ready for our overnight trip to the Hunter Valley for some wine tasting.

Pepper Tree Winery

We got up to the Hunter at around 1pm- checked into our villa and headed straight for the wineries.  We had a ball- Enso and Dyllan enjoyed smelling wine and playing in the fountains as well.  We went to Pepper Tree first- which was probably my favorite of them all.  Next we went to Tyrell's, then David Hook and the Enzo Cafe, and finished at Tempus Two and the Smelly Cheese Factory. Big day- great wine- awesome weather- perfect location-and fun company sums up the day.

The next morning we had breakfast and did some back country sightseeing- er... exploring up the mountains on a gravel road just to see whats up the hill- and to make sure we wernt missing out on any hidden wineries..

We did one more winery before leaving the Hunter Valley- Rosemount and Lindemans (same building- two tastings).

Looking for ants...

Look, Dyllan wasnt the only baby wine tasting!
Saturday night we did an Aussie BBQ at the house- and drank wine.. obviously.

Sunday morning Dave and Dan did the Manly 2k Ocean swim race.  Enso, Dyllan and I cheered from the beach!Followed by Thai in Manly and a ferry ride to the Sydney Opera house and drinks at the opera bar.  Dave and Enso even did a Jet boat ride around the Sydney Harbor while Dyllan and I stayed back and took photos.  After a big day touring around- we headed home, ordered in, and crashed.

Monday we woke up early and spent the morning at Mona Vale beach.  Enso was excited to do some snorkeling- and after some time in the water- he had his dad bury him completely in sand- nearly getting stepped on by an old man walking toward the pool.

We had a quick bite to eat- and a little rest for Dyllan- then headed to Manly for some shopping and to meet Dan for dinner and drinks at the Manly Wine Bar.

Sadly, we had to say goodbye to our roommies this morning.  We had a blast- and can't wait for them to come back!
